Late Wednesday, several media outlets reported that the Houston Rockets will announce Thursday that they have signed Yao Ming to a five-year extension that will see the center in Texas through the 2010-2011 season in a deal that's reportedly worth more than $75,000,000.00 USD.

Yao, a three-year NBA veteran, has been an all-star three times and has seen his scoring and field goal percentage climb every season. He has career averages of 16.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game while shooting 52.5 per cent from the field.

The Rockets reached the playoffs the last two seasons, losing in the first round each time. They ended the playoffs last year with a 40-point loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference semifinals that was the worst Game 7 defeat in NBA playoff history.

Yao says his on-court partnership with all-star forward Tracy McGrady could take the Rockets all the way to the championship next season.

McGrady's arrival last season was an "extremely advantageous exchange for Houston," Yao said in an interview with Chinese newspaper Titan Sports published Wednesday.

"Since this exchange, our team's gained renewed space to lift-off, and this space I think can take us all the way to the championship," Yao said.

Yao, who has been recovering from surgery to remove bone spurs in his left ankle, plans to play for the Chinese national team at the Asian Championships in Qatar on Sept. 8-16 before returning to Houston later in the month. He led China to the Asian basketball championship in 2003.

Yao has signed with Houston until 2011.

Chris Webber's wallet is a little lighter today than it was yesterday.

DETROIT -- Philadelphia 76ers player and former Michigan star Chris Webber was ordered to pay a $100,000 fine Wednesday, nearly two years after he pleaded guilty to a federal criminal contempt charge in the University of Michigan booster scandal.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds fined Webber the maximum allowed after she ruled that Webber's conviction should be treated as a misdemeanor rather than a felony, the U.S. Attorney's office said.

The judge also noted Webber's completion of 330 hours of community service and out-of-pocket expenses of more than $78,000.

In September 2003, Edmunds ordered Webber to perform 300 hours of the community service over the next two summers as a condition of his bond, saying she would decide whether to treat the crime as a felony or a misdemeanor in two years.

"I believe there is a reason and purpose for everything in life and if this situation allowed me the privilege to have my life intersect with the lives of the children I worked with these past two summers, than it was worth every moment" Webber said in a statement on his website.

Messages were left late Wednesday afternoon for Webber's attorney, Steven Fishman, and the U.S. Attorney's office in Detroit.

Webber pleaded guilty to the criminal contempt charge in July 2003, a day before jury selection was scheduled to start for his trial on a perjury charge.

Webber and his father, Mayce Webber Jr., were accused of lying about money authorities say the player received from ex-booster Ed Martin. The maximum penalty would have been five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

A day after Webber's plea, the charges against his father were dropped for "weak or inadmissible sufficient evidence," according to a court order.

In his plea, Webber admitted lying to the grand jury on Aug. 2, 2000, in saying he did not recall giving money to Martin. Webber acknowledged in the plea that in 1994 he gave Martin about $38,000 in cash as partial repayment for expenditures Martin made on his behalf.

Martin, who died in February 2003 at age 69, pleaded guilty in 2002 to conspiracy to launder money and told federal prosecutors he took gambling money, combined it with other funds and lent $616,000 to Webber and three other Michigan players.

Following are the top 5 MLB Power Rankings as picked by CBS.

1.

St. Louis Cardinals
Their magic number in the Central is down to 17. They could have that down to single digits after their weekend series with the Astros.

2.
Boston Red Sox
They will get a chance to beat on the Devil Rays (is that a gimme anymore?) and the Orioles before crucial sets against the Angels and Yankees next week. At least they should have Keith Foulke back by then.
3.
New York Yankees
OK, so ranking them third because the patsies were on deck was a little cheap, but it saved us from having to bump them up on the merit of beating on lost causes; just nine of their final 32 games are against teams with winning records.
4.
Atlanta Braves
They have a tough final stretch with only six of 32 remaining games against teams with sub-.500 records. Those two series are vs. the red-hot Reds and Rockies. Top seed-seeking Cards like that.
5.
Chicago White Sox
Entering Monday night, the White Sox were 62-33 with LF Scott Podsednik in the starting lineup, 17-15 without him. Podsednik was back in the leadoff spot after being activated from the DL.
