Congrats
to San Antonio...
Tim Duncan and Tony Parker celebrate the win! |
|
In
his first Game 7, Tim Duncan was second to none and gave the
San Antonio Spurs their third NBA title Thursday night in
San Antonio.
Duncan
came up big in the biggest game of his career as the Spurs
found the resolve to dethrone the Detroit Pistons, 81-74,
and win the championship.
With
his unique multidimensional talent, Duncan depleted and dissected
the Pistons, collecting 25 points and 11 rebounds. He was
the fulcrum of virtually every key play down the stretch.
Shaky
showings in Games 5 and 6 had many questioning Duncan's determination.
Playing an all-or-nothing game for the first time, he did
it all, rescuing the Spurs in the third quarter and controlling
the game in the final period.
"It
wasn't the greatest of games but there was a stretch where
I felt really good and I just wanted to be assertive at that
point," Duncan said.
Duncan
scored when the Spurs needed it, then turned his teammates
into stars. He even dove for a pair of loose balls, showing
the Pistons he wanted the championship as badly as they did.
Thriving
off Duncan were Manu Ginobili, who scored 11 of his 23 points
in the last 10 minutes, and wily veteran Robert Horry, who
scored 15 points off the bench and collected his sixth championship.
Averaging
20 points and 14 rebounds in the series, Duncan captured his
third Finals MVP award. He also powered the Spurs to titles
in 1999 and 2003 and has put down the roots of possibly the
league's next dynasty.
The
Spurs held a victory parade, floating through the River Walk
in San Antonio on Saturday to celebrate their 3rd NBA Championship
in 7 years.

Russian President Vladimir Putin walked off with New England
Patriots owner Robert Kraft's diamond-encrusted 2005 Super
Bowl ring, but was it a generous gift or a very expensive
international misunderstanding?
Following a meeting of Putin and American business executives
at Konstantinovsky Palace near St. Petersburg on Saturday,
Kraft showed the ring to Putin - who tried it on, put it
in his pocket and left, according to Russian reports.
It isn't clear yet if Kraft, whose business interests also
include paper and packaging companies and venture capital
investments, intended that Putin keep the ring.
Patriots spokesman Stacey James said Wednesday that Kraft
was traveling and he hadn't talked to him in four or five
days, despite e-mails and calls. "He's still overseas,
I can't even tell you where. . . . He's not due back until
next week."
"It's an incredible story. I just haven't been able
to talk to Robert Kraft to confirm the story," James
told The Associated Press.
However, a Kremlin official who spoke on condition of
anonymity out of fear of compromising his position said
the ring was a present. "Such a present was made,"
the official said.
He said Putin had given the ring to the Kremlin library
where other foreign gifts are kept.
James said the ring's worth was "substantially more"
than $15,000 US, as the value had been reported. He refused
to be specific, but noted that the ring has 124 diamonds.
Kraft handed out Super Bowl rings to players and coaches
at his home two weeks ago.
The Patriots have won three of the last four Super Bowls.

The
2005 NBA Draft went this week from Madison Square Garden in
New York and with the No. 1 pick the lowly Milwaukee Bucks
selected Australian Andrew Bogut.
Bogut,
the first player with college experience taken first overall
since Kenyon Martin in 2000, becomes the sixth international
player who competed in the NCAA to be selected first overall,
joining Michael Olowokandi (1998), Tim Duncan (1997), Patrick
Ewing (1985), Hakeem Olajuwon (1984) and Mychal Thompson (1978).
Bogut
repeatedly said he believed he was the top player available,
and apparently the Bucks agreed when they tabbed the Utah
sophomore, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then Lew Alcindor),
Kent Benson and Glenn Robinson as players the franchise selected
with the top overall pick.
The
top 10 picks in this year's draft went as follows:
|
| |
| 1. |
|
Milwaukee Bucks - Andrew Bogut, PF , Utah
(7'0", 242 lbs.)
With huge holes in the frontcourt, the Bucks need the size
and skill that Bogut can provide. The big Aussie can rebound,
score inside and out and he's a fine passer as well. Expect
him to play a significant role in the Bucks' rebuilding. |
| 2. |
|
Atlanta Hawks - Marvin Williams, SF, North Carolina (6'9",
230 lbs.)
Atlanta does not particularly have a need at forward, but
the long-term potential of Marvin Williams must have been
too much for the Hawks to pass up. Holes remain at point guard
and center, but Williams should make an impact as a rookie,
depending on what the Hawks do with their other forwards.
|
| 3. |
|
Utah Jazz - Deron Williams, PG, Illinois (6'3", 210 lbs.)
Deron Williams is a big, strong point guard that fits so well
with the Jazz's plans that Utah traded up to make sure they
could get him. Williams plays great defence, shoots the ball
well and will start immediately with the Jazz. |
| 4. |
|
New Orleans Hornets - Chris Paul, PG, Wake Forest (6'0",
175 lbs.)
Chris Paul is one of the more highly touted point guard prospects
in years - seemingly able to do everything, but his size is
his one area of concern and it resulted in him falling to
New Orleans. Paul is a playmaker that should ignite the Hornets'
turnaround. |
| 5. |
|
Charlotte Bobcats - Raymond Felton, PG, North Carolina
(6'1", 190 lbs.)
Raymond Felton is a confident floor general and, even though
Brevin Knight played well last year, the Bobcats need a young
point guard to build around. Felton's improved jump shot this
season at North Carolina will make his transition to the pros
easier. |
| 6. |
|
Utah Jazz - Martell Webster, SG, Seattle HS (6'7", 235
lbs.)
A high-school sharpshooter, Martell Webster already has an
NBA-ready body. He'll add a solid perimeter threat for the
Blazers which should open things up down low for Zach Randolph.
Despite being a high-schooler, Webster could start early in
his rookie season. |
| 7. |
|
Toronto Raptors - Charlie Villanueva, F, Connecticut
(6'11", 230 lbs.)
Villanueva is able to play all three front court positions.
He's a very talented player, but is passive at times and will
have to kick it up a notch to justify the Raptors picking
him higher than anticipated. |
| 8. |
|
New York Knicks - Channing Frye, C, Arizona (6'11",
250 lbs.)
The Knicks are desperate for size Frye improved his stock
dramatically with workouts and the Chicago camp and the Knicks
are a logical home. He's a skilled big man who should start
for the Knicks right away. |
| 9. |
|
Golden State Warriors - Ike Diogu, PF, Arizona St. (6'8",
250 lbs.)
Ike Diogu was a double-double machine in college. He has a
huge wingspan and has improved his jumper. He will add some
muscle to the Warriors' front court and the team is deep enough
that he will just fit into the rotation as a rookie. |
| 10. |
|
Los Angeles Lakers - Andrew Bynum, C, New Jersey HS (7'0",
285 lbs.)
Perhaps a bit of a reach, but the Lakers realize how tough
it is to find a legitimate center who is athletic. Bynum impressed
during his postseason workouts, to the point that he might
even find some playing time as a rookie. |
