Going into the last week of the 2005 NBA Season, the Miami Heat look to have a stranglehold on the Eastern Conference Title. To say they were a favourite to go the distance would be a safe thing although they will likely meet 2004 Champs the Detroit Pistons in Round 2 for one heckuva series after they demolish either New Jersey or Cleveland in Round 1.

We are featuring Miami Heat dancer Cassandra as the betED.com Girl of the Week. You can see more of her as well as all our Girl of the Week archives in the betED.com Clubhouse.

The post season picture is pretty clear for most teams by now except for New Jersey & Cleveland who still have yet to be mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Notably - the Shaqless LA Lakers continue their slide with Kobe either sitting behind the bench or playing ineffectively and will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1994. Oh Kobe - we know you miss the big man now dontcha? Must be tough to eat all his words. Poor guy...

Replacement players look to be a no go for next year's NHL Season

The NHL won't start next season unless a collective bargaining agreement is reached, commissioner Gary Bettman said Wednesday, seemingly removing the threat of using replacement players.

"If we don't have a new CBA so that our players can start the season with us in October, we will not open on time," Bettman said following a four-hour meeting with owners and GMs.

That message was in contrast to the one 51 days ago. The owners left the last board-of-governors meeting saying there would be hockey in October regardless, which hinted at the possibility of replacement players.

"I think that we can move forward and plan to play a season however it happens this coming year," Edmonton Oilers chair Cal Nichols said March 1.

Now that has changed.

"We are focusing on a getting a collective bargaining agreement with NHL players," said Richard Peddie, president and CEO and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. "What they were doing was looking at alternatives a month an a half ago . . . we're trying to get back to playing NHL hockey with NHL calibre players. In the end, everyone agreed `let's keep focusing on getting a deal."'

Bettman said the use of replacement players was only one of several ideas examined by owners and was never a chosen course of action.

"The fact of the matter is, and we made this clear over the last month or so, we were going to explore all of our options," Bettman said. "That doesn't mean you're doing it or not doing it, it doesn't mean it's a good idea or a bad idea.

"Obviously if we can't open on time, the options become an issue again. But it was never that it was in, and rejected, or out and accepted."

Either way, it means legal impasse and all the ugly legal wrangling that would have ensued have now been temporarily shelved.

But that doesn't mean it's the last we've heard of replacement players. If the season doesn't start on time, the NHL may have to look at it again.

"Among the options (if the season is delayed) are continuing to stay shut down - indefinitely or for some period of time - another is playing with new players," Bettman said. "But we're not going to speculate about that because we want it to be clear our focus is on making a deal with the Players' Association."

San Francisco Giants superstar outfielder Barry Bonds is still recovering from offseason knee surgery and will reportedly need more rehabilitation before he returns to the field.

According to The San Francisco Chronicle, Bonds' knee is taking a long time to heal and he will not be able to return to the lineup on May 1 as he optimistically predicted. The paper has also said that Bonds has yet to take part in any on-field work since the surgery.

Bonds, who currently is on the 15-day disabled list, had an arthroscopic procedure on March 17 for a debridement of tears in the medial and lateral menisci of his right knee. It was the second operation on the knee in less than two months, as he also had a minor arthritis cleanup and small meniscus tear repaired on January 31.

The seven-time MVP first told reporters on March 22 that he might not return until the middle of the 2005 season or next year, if he returned at all. However, Bonds recently said he thought he could return as early as May 1 if the rehab process went smoothly and there were no further setbacks.

The paper also reported that since those remarks Giants manager Felipe Alou has issued a news blackout on Bonds' progress, although the San Francisco skipper did say he does not expect to have the All-Star leftfielder in the lineup anytime soon.

"After the second surgery, me and the team in general, we knew it was going to be awhile," Alou said. "We can't wait for him. We've got to allow the process of healing and the complete rehabilitation to take place. We know Barry is not going to be here tomorrow. Right now he's out of our scope.

"We just hope he gets well as soon as possible."

Bonds was with the team on Opening Day as he accepted his NL MVP award and said to the crowd, "I will be back." He then re-joined the club in Los Angeles last week before returning to the Bay Area to resume his training.

NBA Top 5 Power Rankings by ESPN's Marc Stein - Week 24

Rank (Last Wk) Team Rec. Comment
1 (5) Suns 61-19

So they didn't maintain that 31-4 pace. Big deal. Suns following up that sick start with a 30-15 burst looks quite sufficient.

2 (4) Mavs 56-24

Don't say they have nothing to play for. Those increasingly confident Mavs are trying to finish ahead of Miami ... just in case they need home-court advantage in the Finals.

3 (3) Spurs 59-21

It didn't always seem so with Duncan missing 16 games (9-7), but this actually was a fairly easy season for the most versatile Spurs yet. Forty of S.A.'s 59 wins are by 10 points or more.

4 (1) Nuggets 48-32

We don't want to worry Furious George, but the last team to post the best record after the All-Star break and lose in Round 1 was ... George's 1994 Sonics. To Denver, remember.

5 (2) Pistons 53-27

What's the highest compliment we can give the champs? They placed no one on the committee's All-NBA team, but even without a top-15 player they remain our pick to win the East.
