West Virginia Advances & Wake Forest walks in one of the biggest upsets in the early rounds in this year's NCAA Tourney!

Mike Gansey scored 25 of his career-high 29 points after intermission, including the first seven points for West Virginia in the second overtime, as the seventh-seeded Mountaineers beat Wake Forest, 111-105, in a second-round Albuquerque Region thriller.

A junior from nearby Olmsted Falls, Gansey, who set his previous career highs in back-to-back games in the Big East Tournament, opened the scoring in the second overtime with a lay-up, hit a 3-pointer, then made two free throws to give West Virginia a 100-94 lead with 3 1/2 minutes to play.

"It was just a dream come true," Gansey said. "Obviously with Tyrone (Sally) getting fouled out, I felt I put it upon myself to be more aggressive and maybe try to take the game over. In regulation, I missed a free throw that probably could have sealed the deal. I was a little upset after that."

Gansey, runner-up for Ohio's Mr. Basketball in 2001, began his college career at St. Bonaventure and transferred to West Virginia.

Kevin Pittsnogle, whose last basket came five minutes into the second half, made a 3-pointer from the left corner with 2 1/2 minutes left for a 103-96 lead and Wake Forest got no closer than four points thereafter.

The Mountaineers (23-10) will play Texas Tech in the regional semifinals in Albuquerque.

In other upsets last weekend, No. 10 N.C. State upended defending national champion UConn 65-62 and 12th-seeded Wisconsin-Milwaukee, pulled off their second upset in three days with an 83-75 win over Boston College

NBA Top 5 Power Rankings by ESPN's Marc Stein - Week 20

Rank (Last Wk) Team Rec. Comment
1 (2) Heat 53-16

First team to win 50 games this season. First team to clinch a playoff berth this season. First team to post two 10-game win streaks this season. In short, no one's hotter.

2 (5) Pistons 42-23

Prince looks more like a Most Improved Player favorite every day ... and Gar Heard's fortunes as interim coach (3-0 in this fill-in stint compared to 2-4 last time) are improving, too.

3 (1) Suns 49-16

Nash says his hamstring is feeling a little better. Better yet, after a nice win at Memphis, Suns are quietly 8-3 since the All-Star break, beating Spurs, Pistons, Sonics, Mavs and Nuggets.

4 (3) Spurs 50-16

For the seventh straight full season, Spurs have won 50 games. But this group is only 1-3 without Duncan, so expect a longer rest after this ankle twist to ensure TD's playoff health.

5 (4) Super
Sonics
45-20

Trust us: Coach McMillan is far more concerned about the injury loss of Radmanovic than reports of the season's first locker-room grumbling about minutes, roles, shots, etc.

Barry Bonds has had enough from reporters.

Barry Bonds said he might miss the rest of this season following his latest knee surgery. "I have a lot of work to do to try to get back, maybe next season, maybe by mid-season," he said Tuesday after meeting with San Francisco Giants trainer Stan Conte for 90 minutes. "Right now I'm just going to try to rehab myself back to, I don't know, hopefully next season, hopefully middle of the season. I don't know," he said. "Right now I'm just gonna take things slow. I feel bad for the guys because I want to be out there for them."

The Giants continue to hope it will be much sooner that the seven-time NL MVP is back on the field.

Bonds sounded despondent, saying he was tired and disappointed following a winter in which he was accused of steroid use, his grand jury testimony was leaked and he had two knee operations. He blamed his troubles on the media.

"I really don't have much to say anymore," the embattled slugger said. "My son and I just going to enjoy life. My family's tired. You guys [the media] wanted to hurt me bad enough, you finally got there.

"You wanted me to jump off the bridge, I finally have jumped. You wanted the bring me down, you've finally brought me and my family down. Finally done it. From everybody, all of you. So now go pick a different person. I'm done. Do the best I can, that's about it."

Asked if there was something specific he was talking about Bonds said, "Inner hurt, physical, mentally. Done. I'm mentally drained. I'm tired of my kids crying. Tired."
