We
also feature gal of the week - Krystal
from the Philadelphia 76ers dance team. Philadelphia's expectations
have been raised lately with the addition on Chris Webber to the
line up in a trade with Sacramento 2 games ago. As long as Webber's
nagging knee injury doesn't come back to haunt him, things look
good for Philly to improve on their record. Since the trade, the
76ers are 1-1. Last night in Milwaukee, Alan Iverson was the story
lighting up the Bucks for 45 points in the first 3 quarters and
finishing with 48. Philly emerged the victor 118-111

| The
NBA has approved the purchase of the Cleveland Cavaliers by
an investor group led by Dan Gilbert, chairman and founder
of Quicken Loans, the nation’s largest online lender
and Michigan-based home mortgage company Rock Financial. The
thirty NBA owners unanimously approved the purchase, which
was completed earlier today. Gilbert becomes the fourth owner
in the 35-year history of the Cavaliers franchise.
In
addition to Gilbert, the new ownership group includes David
Katzman, Vice Chairman of Quicken Loans and Managing Partner
for Camelot Ventures, and Grammy-award winning recording artist
Usher
Raymond IV.
“I
am excited about becoming part of this ownership group and
this team,” said Usher. “I will be actively involved
with the Cavaliers on many levels, including the game experience
and our role in the community. I plan to spend a lot of time
with the Cavaliers and look for Cleveland to be my second
home town. I know all the partners in the ownership group
feel the same way.”
“Ownership
of the Cleveland Cavaliers is an honor and a privilege,”
said Gilbert. “It also entails a responsibility to the
fans and the community. We intend to have a positive impact
on as many people as we can throughout northeast Ohio.”
“One
way to do that is by winning,” said Gilbert. “We
will focus on excellence at all levels of the organization
and do all we can to bring a championship home to Cleveland.”
“Another
way to have impact is through community outreach. We intend
to be a leader in the NBA in community involvement,”
continued Gilbert. “We will include the entire organization
in ways that contribute to the region’s many areas of
need.”
“We
will look for fun and exciting ways to deliver the best fan
experience in the NBA and to enhance the arena as one of the
area’s premier entertainment facilities. Usher is the
“ultimate entertainer” and will be assisting us
in this area,” said Katzman.

1 (6) |
Pistons |
35-19 |
It took a lot longer than we expected for the defending
champs to get back up here, but Pistons are 20-6 since Jan.
1. Which suddenly makes them the league's hottest team. |
 |
2 (1) |
Spurs |
42-13 |
Nabbing Nazr was a steal, but hold off on saying it might
have been the league-best move on deadline day. The same tag,
remember, was slapped on the summer signing of Brent Barry. |
 |
3 (3) |
Suns |
43-14 |
Suns have clearly solved their Can't Score Without Nash
problem. But they can't rise higher until he's back in uniform. |
 |
4 (2) |
Mavericks |
37-17 |
For much of the season, Dallas' D was actually ahead of
its offense. But Van Horn doesn't arrive at the best time;
Mavs have allowed 100-plus points in eight of 12. |
 |

Super
Sonics |
38-16 |
As poorly as they played in Milwaukee, Sonics enjoyed a
fine February. They went 8-3, after an 8-7 mark in January. |

NEW
YORK (CP) - The NHL's veiled message to the NHL Players' Association
was clear Tuesday.
Get
back to the table and negotiate a deal sooner rather than
later, or the NHL may try to open shop next fall with replacement
players. The owners made no threats, but said if no deal was
forthcoming, they would have to look at their options.
And
replacement players are an unspoken option.
''I
think that we can move forward and plan to play a season however
it happens this coming year,'' Edmonton Oilers chair Cal Nichols
said after a five-hour board of governors meeting wrapped
up at a Manhattan hotel. ''I think that in itself is what
our fans want to see, so we'll just see how it works out in
the summer.
''I think everybody still has a preference to work with the
union and try to negotiate something and hopefully that's
where it takes us.''
Plan
A is to negotiate a deal with the NHLPA in time to save the
NHL entry draft and conduct a normal off-season in order to
re-launch the game and try to win back fans.
Plan
B, at least in its early stages, could definitely see the
use of replacement players if it's clear a deal can't be done.
Commissioner
Gary Bettman tried to downplay the topic.
''We
discussed a variety of options and I don't want to focus on
any one because it would seriously be misconstrued and be
potentially inflammatory,'' he told reporters. ''The fact
is there are lots of options.''
He
later added: ''Hopefully it's an alternative proposition that
we never have to focus on because our commitment remains making
a fair partnership deal with the players.''
The
NHL could pick up the phone as soon as Wednesday to try and
resume labor talks.
''We're
going to invite the union back to the table soon and I assume
that they will discharge their legal obligation to bargain
in good faith,'' Bettman said.
''The
more the damage, the less money we're going to have to ultimately
pay in players' salaries,'' he added. ''So I think it's in
everybody's interest to move forward as expeditiously as possible.''
The
players, who held their own meeting Tuesday in Toronto, sang
a different tune.
''It's
important for both sides to take a little time to reassess,''
NHLPA president Trevor Linden said. ''Obviously the process
at this point hasn't worked and we'll step back and have a
look back at how we can move this thing forward.
''To
get right back at it and start firing proposals, I'm not sure
is the right way to do it.''
|
|
 |
| Goodenow
and Bettman in a war of words again with the NHL subtly
threatening to use replacement players if the NHLPA
doesn't get back to the bargaining table soon. |
