In
this week's newsletter, we feature:
- NFL playoff preview & playoff brackets
- new additions to baseball's Hall of Fame
- Jermaine O'Neal's 55 point night
- the blowout between USC and Oklahoma
Of
course, our weekly look at a featured NFL
cheerleader!
In
their regular-season finale, the Chargers relied on Doug Flutie
and Philip Rivers at quarterback, Michael Turner and Andrew Pinnock
at running back, Malcolm Floyd at wide receiver and Ryan Krause
at tight end. It worked. San Diego built a 24-3 lead and hung on
to beat Kansas City 24-17. We're sure that "Lacy",
was there for them last weekend as well as all season!
San
Diego finished first in the AFC West and will go on to play the
New York Jets on January 8th in the first of two AFC Wild Card games.

Playoffs
are just ahead! Can the Pats make it 3 for 4 this year? |
|
|
The
NFL regular season is history and all eyes are now turned
to the march towards Superbowl XXXIX. Expectations are high
for all teams entering the post season with emphasis on a
handful of teams including Pittsburgh, New England, Philly,
Indianapolis, San Diego & Atlanta.
Here
at betED.com, we like a New England vs Philadelphia final
with lots of close matchups leading up to the main event.
The weakness of the NFC in general make the Eagles a strong
contender to make it to the big show. The Patriots are looking
as strong as ever heading into the post season who really
should have finished the season 15-1 had it not been for that
slip up in Miami the week before Christmas. With Bill Belichick
calling the shots and Tom Brady at the helm, New England looks
again to be the team to beat this year!

NFL
Playoff Brackets look like this:
| The
NFL playoffs are not based on a pure bracket system. What is
shown above would play out if the #3 seed beats the #6 seed
during Wild Card play. In the divisional playoffs, the #1 seed
is assured of playing the lowest seeded Wild Card survivor.
There are no restrictions on intra-division games and the higher
seed of any matchup will have home-field advantage. |
| Wade
Boggs and Ryne Sandberg, All-Stars in the world of Major League
Baseball in the '80s and '90s, were voted in Tuesday to join
baseball's immortals in the Hall of Fame.
For
Boggs, it was as much expected as anything. However, in typical
Wade Boggs gentlemanly like fashion, he reacted humbly when
he first heard the news. "I talked to Brooks Robinson
two years ago and he said that they've changed their policy,"
Boggs said, acknowledging that Hall of Fame officials now
have the last word in which cap logo will be engraved into
a player's Cooperstown plaque. "In my opinion, if the
Hall of Fame picked my Little League hat, I'd be very happy
with that also."
For
Ryne Sandberg, it was a bit more of a surprise but still,
obviously, welcome news! The Chicago Cubs' legendary second
baseman gained election on his third try, and rightfully so.
When he retired, he had walloped more home runs than any second
baseman in history (Jeff Kent has since passed him), and he
put together a stretch in which he won nine consecutive Gold
Gloves.

Jermaine
O'Neil lights up the Bucks for 55 on Tuesday. |
|
|
Jermaine
O'Neal scored a career-high and NBA season-high 55 points
and had 11 rebounds to lead the Indiana Pacers to a 116-99
victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night. The all-star
has made an immediate impact since an arbitrator reduced his
25-game suspension for fighting with Detroit fans to 15 games,
with Indiana going 4-1.
''What
I'm happy about is we've won four in a row,'' said O'Neal,
who also had 11 rebounds. ''I tip my hat off to my team. They
put me in position, that's what this team is all about."
O'Neal's
55 bested Allen Iverson's 54 points on Dec. 18, also against
the Bucks. In his five games back, O'Neal is averaging 29.4
points and 10.6 rebounds to help the Pacers dig out from a
rough December that included a seven-game losing streak.''

| It
had all the potential for a great game - you remember last
week, we spoke of all indications being as such. This was
not the case Tuesday as USC overwhelmed Oklahoma 55-19 in
the 2005 FedEx Orange Bowl from Miami.
Matt
Leinart and his Southern California teammates played to perfection,
leaving no doubt about this national championship.
Even
better, they don't have to share it.
The
Heisman Trophy winner threw a record five touchdown passes
and USC overwhelmed Oklahoma 55-19 Tuesday night in the Orange
Bowl, assuring the Trojans will end the season just as they
started: No. 1.
"I
think we proved tonight that we are the No. 1 team in the
country without a doubt," Leinart said.
The
much-anticipated battle of unbeatens, No. 1 vs. No. 2, turned
into a coronation for USC, which had to settle for a share
of the national championship last year after being left out
of the Bowl Championship Series title game.
"We
didn't expect it to be this easy, but the game went our way
from the beginning," USC coach Pete Carroll said. "I
was a little surprised."
USC
surely will become the first team to repeat as AP national
champions since Nebraska in 1994-95 and join Florida State
in 1999 as the only teams to go wire-to-wire -- from preseason
to post bowls -- as No. 1.
